Knock – unlock your Mac without a password using your iPhone and Apple Watch App Reviews

I use it all the time

I sometimes sit down at my Mac and get sad and frustrated… when I dont have my phone on me so I cant use Knock. Knock works just that good. Awesome app and awesome idea.

Needs polish

Works ok but needs some kind of calibration as at least half the time my “knocks” don’t work even though they appear to register on my Mac. Currently it’s just as quick for me to type in my password. Will be cool once they get auto lock and unlock working based on proximity.

Awesome - Does what it says.

So simple to setup & use!

Works great but screen needs to be awake

Hopefully multiple Macs can be added soon, as that would be a great feature.

Works great

This is a great app. It usually works all the time. Sometimes it doesnt register the knock but that does not bother me. I find that recently when my iPhone gets connected to my Mac my keyboard brightness gets shut off. When I go to raise the brightness it shows up that the brightness is at one bar when its not on at all. Thats the only problem I have. Everything else works like a charm.

It Works but needs more functionality

Concept is good & it works.

Works like a charm now!

I updated my iPhone and knock now works almost every time without fail. It is faster and so much cooler knocking on your phone to unlock your Mac!

AWESOME

The recent update dosnt require the app to be running in the background in order to work, thank you so very much.. It was getting a bit annoying when I go to close all my apps and I closed the app it wouldnt be able to unlock my Mac, now I can just hop on my imac and not worry about if the app is still running!! Thanks again and again!..

Great app

A superb app. I love not having to type in my password every time I come back to my laptop. If only it would auto-lock when I leave! One nice thing about this app is that it continuously listens for knocks. So if you dont knock with exactly the right timing the first time, you can just keep knocking and it unlocks on the third of fourth tap. A great implementation of a superb idea. Well worth the price if youre constantly having to enter your password, like I was.

Caveat Emptor. Wanted to love

Read all of the FAQs and Troubleshooting before buying. I didn’t, and it’s virtually useless. Limitations: doesn’t work when your mac is asleep; doesn’t work when you first login; doesn’t work when someone else is logged in and you try to switch users. In other words, it *only* works if you boot into your account, then lock your own account and stop the computer from sleeping, and no one else uses your mac. I’m afraid it’s gone from neat gimmick to just a non-operational idea. Too bad.

Work very well !

Very good app easy to setup, simple to use and work very well !

Could not get it to work

Latest MacBook Pro and iPhone 6. Not able to get it to work

Issues

Worked great for a while, now Im unable to setup with my phone… possible issue with iOS 8.1 or maybe Yosemite.

Does not work!

It doesnt work for new Mac Pro and Iphone6!!!

Nice idea poor implementation

I dont know if its the app or if its the way Apple devices handle Bluetooth, but when I wake my Mac and want to use knock, which is really the only time you would need to input the password, it mostly doesnt connect or it takes 5 minutes, making the whole thing knock idea an unnecessary complication. Its a nice trick, but unfortunately it was left at that. I hope this will change in the near future...

Works great, but too slow

Paired with my MacBook Pro, Knock works well when everything is ready to go, but when you open the screen to your laptop and the little green circle starts to spin while Knock is searching for the phone, I can ALWAYS type my 12 character password in more quickly than Knock can find my iPhone.

Doesnt work

Went through the setup. Both my MacBook Pro and iPhone 6 detected each other. But knocking doesnt do anything. Emailed tech support through their site for help. Nothing.

Needs major work

Bought this after thinking it would come in handy as my machine does tend to be alone a lot of the time, and even at home if I step away my screensaver kicks in and I need to relog. That said, when I followed all directions, everything worked well. Then I walked away from the computer and it didnt lock. So I forced my computer to lock (which activated my screensaver) but then knocking did not exit me out of my screensaver - I had to touch the keyboard or mouse to get the login screen THEN knock (and even now this has stopped working). Defeats the purpose if I have to touch my machine to activate the login window just so I can knock - I may as well type in my password. Fix these glitches and Ill see about a re-review.. but sadly, a bit of money wasted in my opinion.

Just not consistent

I bought this app when it first came out a while ago, used it for a few days, and then gave up because it was wildly inconsistent. Oddly, it seemed to work well for the first day or so, and then the performance just went downhill: most times, I could unlock my Mac by typing my password a lot faster than I could unlock my Mac with Knock Given that the developers say theyve improved things, I decided to give it another go. Just like last time, it worked well initially, and then it just stopped working consistently, even though my devices are definitely paired. It makes no sense at all to have to knock 10 or 15 times to unlock my Mac, when I can simply type my Password in far less time. I see Im not the only person reporting that the app starts by working well, and then degrades; surely the developers can recognise some kind of pattern in these reports and get to the bottom of that.

Major time saver

I think the reviews are a bit harsh. Is it flawless 100% of the time? No. If you can find another app that does the same thing flawlessly, go buy it, but in the meantime this is one of the apps I would really miss if I had to give up. If you only need to unlock your Mac a couple of times a day, you wont be happy with this app (as it can take a while to recognize the iPhone after a few hours, making it quicker to type the password). If you frequently lock your Mac at work when you step away for security reasons, this is a godsend. I typically use a hot corner to put my Mac into screensaver, and if I come back within an hour or two, a tap on the keyboard brings up the green circle immediately and Im in. Ive used a variety of other Bluetooth-enabled apps (eg Kevo), and often it takes a few seconds for the devices to recognize each other. This app doesnt seem much worse or better in that regard.
